Intergenerational Trauma and Familial Conflict

Navigating the complex landscape of trauma is a profound journey. Traumatic experiences, whether on an individual or larger scale, have a unique ability to transcend time, impacting not only those who directly experience them but echoing across generations. This phenomenon is known as intergenerational trauma or secondary traumatization, and it extends its reach far beyond the initial event.

Sometimes referred to as historical trauma, this form of intergenerational trauma arises from oppression linked to culture, race, or ethnicity. Its effects are not confined to the immediate survivors but stretch across time, influencing the lives of descendants who may not have been born during the original trauma.

Intergenerational trauma manifests in various aspects of life, affecting relationships with family members and romantic partners, one's sense of self and personal identity, communication patterns, parenting styles, and overall mental health and well-being.

Possible causes of Intergenerational trauma or ways intergenerational trauma is passed down from one generation to the next :

  • Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome : This phenomenon manifests as a syndrome encompassing psychological, spiritual, emotional, and behavioral dimensions, contributing to a profound impact on individuals. The consequences include a diminished sense of self-esteem, persistent feelings of anger, anti-blackness, and the internalization of racist beliefs.

  • Experience of witnessing verbal, physical violence, sexual abuse, neglect  or emotional abused in generations of your family lineage and/or abuse during your own childhood.

  • Cycle of codependency, toxic relationship and/or role dynamics in partnership or family relationships.

  • Familial generations of alcohol and substance abuse, incarceration.

  • Systemic racism,  discrimination, oppression, long term financial hardship.

How can therapy help heal Intergenerational Trauma?

In therapy, we begin on a shared journey of healing. Together, we create a nurturing space to gently explore and process your unique narrative—uncovering the impact of past experiences, acknowledging the threads within your ancestral lineage, and embracing your authentic truth.

Our focus is on guiding you through the layers of your story through your personal lens and providing compassionate support as you navigate the weight of your experiences. We will work together to calm your nervous system with the use of somatic interventions and techniques while also helping you recognize and release adopted truths. Inner Child healing is a holistic healing modality that allows you to connect with your child parts of self that may have not been able to be fully, seen, heard or expressed. This process allows you to stand rooted in your genuine self, fostering a sense of grounded kindness towards self and reclaiming unconditional love.
